Things Aren’t Always as Bad as They Seem

When we came home from church one Sunday afternoon, we discovered that my Thanksgiving cactus had fallen from the shelf it had been sitting on. I was upset when I saw it and hurriedly put my purse and Bible bag inside so I could pick it up. I was dismayed to find that several branches had been broken off during its tumble off the shelf. Thankfully, I quickly remembered how easy it is to root this cactus. I found a small pot and filled it with potting soil.

Free Tip: Many plants like my Thanksgiving cactus can be rooted by simply placing the broken branches in potting soil.

After a few moments of working, I had fixed the plant that had fallen and created a new smaller version of it in a new pot. What I had first thought to be a terrible thing turned out to hold a blessing I had not expected. I now had two lovely plants to enjoy. As I looked at the new little cactus growing in its pot earlier, I couldn’t help but smile. It has served as a reminder that sometimes things aren’t as bad as they seem.

Sometimes thing that looks like a terrible mistake might turn out to hold a blessing we never expected. There are times things aren’t as bad as we may think they are, my friend. I must confess; I often allow myself to get upset rather than look for what the Lord might be doing in the situation. I need to do better at training myself to look for Him in the situation before I get so upset. Romans 8:28 reminds us that God is always working for the good in every situation.

I know God is faithful, but I have a bad habit that I am embarrassed to confess. I know He is faithful and always comes through for me, but I usually panic first. I am getting better, but it is still a struggle. This incident with my plant has challenged me to do better. We never know what He might be doing in the situations we deem as “bad”. Perhaps it would be better to look for Him and see what He might be doing before I get so upset.

We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God: those who are called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28 – Katrina Douglas
