This morning I was singing along to “What A Beautiful Name” by Hillsong Worship. It is such a beautiful song and I absolutely love it. However, it occurred to me as I was singing my heart out this morning, that I may feel like Celine Dion while singing it but in all reality I probably come across a lot more like Barney Fife. I must admit that I cringed at the thought but then I just started laughing at myself. I know I am certainly not the only person out there belting their heart out in song only to realize they are actually just making a joyful noise to the Lord. Not all of us were called to be Vestal Goodman.
And you know what? That’s okay. Not all of us were called to be great singers but all of us were called to do something for God. Each and every one of us has been given something that we can use to glorify God. Whatever it may be, whether great or small, we are called to use it to bring honor and glory to God’s Name. I may not have been gifted with the most beautiful of voices but God has given me other talents to use to glorify His Name. The most obvious thing that He gave me to use for His glory is my love of writing. My love for the written word can be used for His glory.
But that is not the only thing in my life that can be used to glorify Him. I am a mother. God gave me the privilege to raise children. Therefore, I am called to be the best mother I can be. Notice I did not say the perfect mother; I said the best mother I can be. As a mother, I can strive to do my best to honor Him as I teach and train my children to love and honor Him. This calling is not to be taken lightly. I have the opportunity to live as a godly example before my children as I try to encourage them to love and accept the Savior I love. Motherhood can be another way I glorify God.
I am not only a mother, but I am also a daughter, a sister, a friend, and a church member. Each one of these aspects of who I am offers me another opportunity to glorify God. Each day offers me a chance to worship God and honor Him through my life. Am I taking every opportunity to do so? Am I glorifying Him in each of these areas of my life? Are you? If you take a closer look at each of the roles you play in life, can you truly say you are doing your absolute best to glorify God in those areas? Or are you still looking for a hidden talent to use for Him?
It is easy to get so focused on what talents that we may or may not have that we often forget; God called us to honor Him with everything we have. That means we can worship God by devoting every area of our lives for His glory. We can choose to do our best to please Him in every area of our lives. “Now that it’s all over, what did you really do yesterday that’s worth mentioning?” – Coleman Cox. With eternity in mind what are you doing that really matters? I believe God wants us to try to honor Him in the everyday little mundane things we are called to do.
Yes, the things we are called to do. There are things that you do that no one else could do. There are roles that God has called you to fulfill that no one else could do. You can decide to honor God in each role you play and use all of your gifts to glorify Him. “Use your best gifts to serve the highest purpose: making a big deal out of God” – Max Lucado. How about deciding to make a big deal out of God in every single area of your life? What a difference it would make if we all decided to do just that! Just imagine a group of men and women deciding to make a big deal out of God!
I can only imagine the changes we could make in the lives of those around us as they saw our determination to make a big deal out of God in everything we did. I believe we could really have a godly influence on those around us if we decided to view each area in our life as a chance to praise, worship, and honor God. I challenge each one of you reading these words to really take a closer look at your life. I urge you to prayerfully consider determining to make a big deal out of God in each and every area of your life. Then have the courage to step out and do it!
Look closely at each area of your life, each role you play, each talent and gift you possess and ask yourself is there something more you could be doing to make a bigger deal of God in that area. Then, courageously ask God to show you how to do better. Pray for a new boldness to shine for Him! Look for ways to share His love. Determine to be a light for Him in every situation you face. When you’re tempted to give in to frustration, pray for extra grace. Be the example God is calling you to be. Be the light. Be the salt. And most importantly, make a big deal of Him!
…whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Cor. 10:31
