Separation

Genesis One: Separating the Light From the Dark

Before time as we know it began, there was “darkness over the surface of the deep” (Gen. 1:2). As God gave birth to time itself, He brought light to our world. There at the very beginning of it all, God separated light from darkness. He stepped into our world, bringing light to dispel the darkness. Before the sun, moon, and stars were created, there was light. God stepped into the darkness and called forth light. Genesis 1:3, “Then God said, ‘Let there be light’ and there was light.”

If we look at the first chapter of the Gospel of John, we see that Jesus was there at the beginning. “All things came into being through Him” John 1:3. He was there at Creation. He was the Light that entered the world. “In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men” John 1:4. As both Creator and Messiah, Jesus brought light into our world. In John 8:12, Jesus told us that He was “the light of the world” and promised that those who follow Him “will not walk in the darkness”.

The moment our world was birthed, God separated light from darkness. At the moment of our rebirth, He separates light from the darkness. He calls us “out of darkness into His marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9). He rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and brought us into His kingdom, the Kingdom of Light. As His followers, we are called to walk in His light so that we can be a light pointing others to Him. “For you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light” Eph. 5:8.

Light must be separated from the dark. It has been that way from the beginning of time. How can we make sure we are walking in His light? How can we make sure we are reflecting His light in a dark world? “How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Your word” Ps. 119:9. His Word is our Guide; it is our Light. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” Ps. 119:105. To walk safely in the dark, we need the light of His Word. We need His Word to light the way for us.

Dear heart, as His followers, we are called to step out of the darkness and walk in His light. We are called to separate ourselves from the darkness around us. This world is growing darker by the day, but that means our light will shine all the brighter. The darker your surroundings, the brighter your light will be. I urge you to get in His Word and let it fill your heart and mind with His light. Draw closer to the Light and let Him fill you with His light. This world needs your light and your influence. Let your light shine for Him today.
