Until You Open Your Eyes

My daughter and I were talking recently about a swimming experience she had at a church member’s lake this past summer. She told me about how she had been swimming around in the water for a while and decided to put her goggles on and swim underwater. She went on to describe the darkness of the water and the things she could see floating around her. She had me laughing when she described how it had looked and how quickly she had snatched her goggles off, nearly choking herself.

She said, “You don’t realize the darkness you are in until you open your eyes.” Since she is her mother’s daughter, she looked at me and said, “You should write that down”. We both knew there was a lesson there. This is so true. You don’t realize the darkness you are in until you open your eyes. Dear heart, we are living in some pretty dark times. The enemy is active like never before. However, because deception is his favorite tool, many people are unaware of just how dark things are.

This is why it is so important to pray for discernment. We must ask God to open our eyes so that we can clearly see the darkness around us. We must pray for His Holy Spirit to open our eyes to the deception of the enemy. It is also important to stay in His Word so that it can be “a light to our path and a lamp unto our feet” (Ps. 119:105). Unless our eyes are open, we can be unaware of the darkness growing around us. As His followers, we must do all we can to “walk in the light” (1 John 1:7).

Dear heart, I encourage you to get in His Word and let its light shine into your life. We need daily exposure to His Word so that His light illuminates our path. This world is dark, but He is the Light we can cling to. Hold on to Him and trust Him to guide you.
